Botanically known as Musa acuminata ‘Blue Java’ from the Musaceae family. The Blue Java Banana, also known as the Ice Cream Banana, is a unique banana cultivar prized for its sweet flavor and distinct blue-green coloration. Originating from Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines and Hawaii, it is a medium to large-sized banana plant that can reach heights of up to 15 feet under optimal growing conditions. The plant features large, broad leaves that are green with silver hues, lending it an attractive tropical appearance.

The Blue Java Banana produces creamy-white, elongated fruits that are known for their smooth texture and delicious taste reminiscent of vanilla ice cream, hence the nickname “Ice Cream Banana.” When fully ripe, the peel takes on a silvery-blue tint, giving the fruit its distinctive appearance. The flesh is soft, creamy, and sweet with hints of vanilla, making it a favorite among banana enthusiasts for fresh consumption and dessert preparations.

Growing Tips

  • Blue Java Banana plants thrive in rich, well-draining soil with a pH range between 5.5 to 7.0. They require regular moisture but should not be waterlogged.

  • Provide full to partial sunlight, with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and fruit production.
  • These plants prefer tropical to subtropical climates with temperatures ranging between 20°C to 30°C. Protect them from frost and extreme cold as they are sensitive to low temperatures.
  • Regular fertilization with a balanced fertilizer high in potassium promotes healthy growth and fruiting. Apply fertilizer every 2-3 months during the growing season.
  • Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture, suppresses weed growth, and provides nutrients as it decomposes.
